Solar-Powered Skylight Installation in Allen
The Challenge
The homeowner's single-story home in Twin Creeks had an interior hallway connecting the master suite to the kitchen and living area that received zero natural light. The hallway felt like a cave during the day, requiring overhead lights to be on from sunrise to sunset. The adjacent kitchen also felt darker than it should because of the hallway's light-absorbing effect. The homeowner wanted a natural light solution that would not require running electrical wiring or adding to their energy costs.
Our Solution
We installed a Velux VSS solar-powered fresh-air skylight directly above the hallway transition between the kitchen and the master wing. The solar-powered unit requires no electrical wiring — a hidden solar panel charges an integrated battery that operates both the skylight venting motor and the included solar-powered blinds via remote control. The Clean, Quiet & Safe laminated glass blocks UV rays and reduces rain noise. We framed a light well through the attic space at a splayed angle to maximize light spread into both the hallway and the kitchen.
The Result
The hallway is now the brightest corridor in the house during daylight hours, with no electric light required from approximately 7 AM to 7 PM in summer. The kitchen gains noticeable ambient light from the splayed light well, and the homeowner uses the fresh-air venting function to exhaust cooking heat during mild weather. Because the unit is solar-powered, there was no increase in energy costs — in fact, the homeowner reduced their lighting-related electricity use by eliminating 8+ hours of daily hallway light usage.
