Fiberglass vs. Steel Entry Doors: Which Holds Up in North Texas?

Almost every homeowner replacing a front door lands on the same fork in the road: fiberglass or steel. Both are sold as low-maintenance, both are built around an insulating foam core, and both will outlast the builder-grade door most North Texas homes were finished with. The marketing on either side tends to flatten the decision into a slogan — steel is the secure one, fiberglass is the pretty one — and neither slogan survives contact with a DFW spring.
This is the walkthrough we give homeowners in person, before anyone picks a finish. It covers what you are actually buying in each material, where the North Texas climate punishes one and not the other, and which door belongs on which opening — because on most houses the honest answer is that you want both, just not on the same doorway.
The Short Answer
If the door is the one your guests walk up to, faces weather, and needs to look like stained wood, choose fiberglass. It will not dent from hail, will not rust, and takes a wood-grain finish that steel cannot match.
If the door is a side entry, a garage-to-house door, a utility door, or a back door under a deep covered porch — and the budget matters — steel is a genuinely good choice, and spending more would be spending on looks nobody sees.

What You Are Actually Buying
Neither door is solid. A modern insulated entry door is a sandwich: two skins bonded to a rigid foam core, wrapped in a perimeter of wood, composite, or steel rail and stile material that gives the lock and hinges something to bite into.
- A fiberglass door uses two molded composite skins. The mold is taken from real wood, which is why a well-made fiberglass door reads as oak or mahogany from the curb rather than as plastic. The skin flexes under impact instead of deforming.
- A steel door uses two sheets of galvanized steel, commonly in the 24-to-20-gauge range, where a lower gauge number means thicker, stiffer steel. Gauge is the most useful spec on a steel door quote and the one most often left off it.
Ask what the lock block is — the solid block behind the bore that the deadbolt anchors into. On a cheap door of either material it is small and soft, and that is what a kick actually finds. It is the same principle behind our door installation process: the parts you cannot see once the door is hung are the parts that decide how it ages.
Insulation: The Core Does the Work, the Glass Undoes It
Both materials are built around polyurethane foam, and that foam — not the skin — does most of the insulating. The U.S. Department of Energy makes the same point in its Energy Saver guidance on exterior doors: an insulated steel or fiberglass door outperforms a solid wood slab, and the losses that remain are concentrated in the glass and around the perimeter rather than through the panel.
Where the two differ is conduction. Steel is a metal, so it moves heat readily wherever the outside face connects to the inside face — at the edges, at the frame, and around the hardware. Manufacturers engineer thermal breaks to interrupt that path, and the good ones do it well, but fiberglass never had the problem to solve in the first place. On a west-facing DFW entry in August, that difference is something you can feel with the back of your hand on the inside of the door.
None of it matters as much as the glass. Add a large decorative lite, sidelites, and a transom, and the glass package becomes the dominant factor in the whole unit's performance — exactly as it is with energy-efficient windows. Dents and Hail: The North Texas Deciding Factor
This is where the comparison stops being generic and starts being local. North Texas takes hail every spring, and a storm that leaves a roof serviceable can still put a field of dimples across a west- or south-facing steel door. Steel dents permanently. Body filler and paint can hide it, but you will know it is there, and the repair breaks the factory finish that was keeping corrosion out.
Fiberglass skins flex on impact and recover. Exposure decides how much this matters. A door set eight feet back under a covered porch, facing north or east, sees a fraction of what an unsheltered west-facing entry sees. Walk outside and look at your doorway before you decide — the overhang above it is part of the specification.
Security: Mostly Not a Material Question
“Steel is more secure” is the most repeated claim in the entry door category and the most misleading one. Forced entries do not usually go through the slab. They go through the jamb, where a short screw pulls out of soft trim, or through the strike plate, or around a lock with a short throw.
What actually makes an entry hard to defeat:
- A reinforced strike plate anchored with three-inch screws that reach past the jamb into the framing behind it.
- A deadbolt with a full one-inch throw, or a multi-point lock that engages the frame at the top, middle, and bottom of the slab.
- A solid, properly shimmed jamb that is plumb and fully supported, so the lock has something rigid to pull against.
- Laminated or impact-rated glass in any lite big enough to reach through, which matters far more than the skin on a door with a large decorative panel.
A well-built fiberglass door with those four things beats a bargain steel door without them every time. Choose the material for climate and appearance; buy security in the frame and the hardware.
Sun, Heat, and Finish Life
A dark door on a west-facing Texas elevation gets punishingly hot. Steel absorbs that heat and expands, and on a slab already under thermal stress the finish is the first thing to give — which is why some manufacturers place conditions on dark colors in high-exposure installations. Do not take our word for that, or a salesperson's: ask for the finish warranty on the exact door and color you are ordering and read what it says about exposure. If a color choice is a condition of the coverage, you want it in writing before the order goes in, not after.
Fiberglass is dimensionally stable through the same heat cycle, and the color on a factory-finished fiberglass door is a cured coating rather than field paint. Either material holds up better than a wood slab in this climate — the wood doors we install are chosen for beauty and protected by an overhang, not asked to survive full unshaded west sun.
Appearance
Steel doors are smooth or lightly embossed with a panel profile, and they take paint well. On a clean modern or transitional elevation a flat painted steel door looks exactly right, and nobody walking up the path is going to identify the material.
Fiberglass wins the moment you want wood. A grained fiberglass door can be stained in a range of wood tones, and the mold texture carries the illusion at conversational distance in a way an embossed steel panel does not. If your home is a craftsman, a traditional brick elevation, or anything where a stained front door is part of the look — the pattern across much of Plano, Frisco, and McKinney — fiberglass gets you there without the maintenance a real wood door demands.
One practical note: HOA and architectural committees in many DFW communities have rules about door color and style, and a few have rules about material. Check before you order rather than after the door arrives.
Cost and Lifetime Value
Steel is generally the lower-cost material and fiberglass sits above it. On a real quote, though, the skin is rarely the biggest variable. Glass inserts, sidelites, a transom, hardware, and how much carpentry the opening needs typically move the total more than the choice between the two materials does.

The lifetime math usually favors fiberglass on an exposed entry, for one reason: a dented or rusting steel door gets replaced, not repaired. If the opening is sheltered and low-traffic, that risk never materializes and steel's lower cost stands on its own.
Which Door Belongs on Which Opening
Most homes we work on end up with a mix, and that is the right answer rather than a compromise:

- Garage-to-house door: steel. It is out of the weather, it is a fire-separation location in most builds, and nobody is admiring it.
- Side or utility entry: steel, unless it is visible from the street on a corner lot.
- Back door under a covered patio: either. Decide on appearance and budget — the cover largely neutralizes the climate argument.

What to Check Before You Sign
- Steel gauge, if you are quoting steel. Lower number, thicker steel. If it is not on the quote, ask for it in writing.
- What the frame is made of, and whether the jamb is being replaced or reused. A new slab in an old, out-of-plumb jamb is the most common way a door replacement disappoints.
- The U-factor for the configuration you are ordering, glass included.
- The finish warranty and any exposure or color conditions attached to it, from the manufacturer, in writing.
- Threshold, sill pan, and weatherstripping. Water management at the bottom of the opening is what keeps a steel door from rusting and any door from rotting the framing beneath it.
